My day Friday
Akira horigurchi
Just another Friday party.
You ingest me,
the poison so bitter you need a chaser,
but you don’t see me like that.
You see
liquid gold to fill your heart
with courage
flirt with your crush,
stumble onto the dance floor,
laugh with your friends,
say “Ehhh!” when someone loses a “fun drinking game” and “has to” take a shot,
laugh with your friends,
talk in British accents,
laugh
laugh
…
The next morning you wake up,
your brain beating like a second heart,
trying to remember
where you are,
what happened last night,
before you -- wait for it -- Hu-uh Hu-uh Gluah! in your toilet bowl,
and as chunks fly through your mouth and nostrils you vow
“never again
will I drink so much poison.”
Until next Friday turns me back to gold.
You never did stop to think
that in a given week you see me more often than you see
your parents, brothers, sisters,
friends you regret losing touch with.
I am the one you turn to
to enable you,
relax you,
comfort you.
Control you.
